Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. Together with Gauguin and Cézanne belongs to the greatest post-impressionists.

Vincent Van Gogh first worked in an art shop and later was a traveling preacher in the area of Belgium. He worked as a painter only in the last ten years of his life. At first he worked only with dark colors until he came into contact with Impressionism in Paris. He used bright colors in a unique and recognizable style, which he perfected while living in Arles. He created 900 paintings and 1100 sketches. He lived in different parts of Holland and France. Constantly in poverty and on the edge of survival. He sold only one painting during his lifetime, so he lived mainly on his brother’s modest financial assistance.

Van Gogh admired Gauguin. He wanted them to be treated equally. They often argued, and one incident contributed to his mental breakdown, resulting in his ear being cut off.

His most famous paintings are Starry night – Zvezdna nocht, Valley with the ploughman, Olive trees with the Alps in the backgroundCypresses 1889 , Corn field with cypresses, Country road and Night in Provence, Branches of white almond blossom against the blue sky,Van Gogh’s chair,Bedroom in Arles,The Night Cafe, Cafe at nightStarry Night over the RhoneandStill life – Vase with twelve sunflowers.

Eleven years after the death of Vincent van Gogh, his paintings were exhibited in Paris and Vincent van Gogh became famous, important overnight and highly sought after. His most expensive painting to date was sold in 1990 for $82.5 million. Only Picasso achieved a higher price.
