Paul Cézanne – portrait of the painter

“I owe you the truth in painting.”

    Paul Cézanne

Our gallery offers 80 hand-painted Paul Cézanne reproductions – from the still lifes with apples and the portraits to the views of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Every hand-painted painting on canvas is made in oil under a painter’s brush, not in a printer, and comes in fifteen sizes, from 40 centimetres on the shorter side up to 180, with a made-to-measure size on request.

Paul Cézanne (19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906) was born in Aix-en-Provence and is regarded as one of the founders of modern painting. In 1861 he moved to Paris, supported by his childhood friend the writer Émile Zola, and there came close to the impressionists. He worked slowly and at length, and could repeat the same motif for years; it is precisely that persistence – the mountain, the basket of fruit, the same sitter in the same chair – that turned his work into a bridge between impressionism and the painting of the twentieth century.

Four years before his death he set up a studio on the edge of Aix, at Les Lauves, where his last major works were made. In October 1906 a storm caught him painting out of doors; he had to be carried home, and he died a few days later. His canvases are held today by the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Art Institute of Chicago – and it is those works that our reproductions are painted from.

The collection covers every one of his main groups of motifs: still lifes with apples, peaches and jugs; portraits of his wife Hortense, of the gardener Vallier and of fellow painters; Provençal landscapes from L’Estaque, Gardanne and the Bibémus quarry; the house of the hanged man at Auvers-sur-Oise; and the early figure compositions. The earliest works on offer date from the 1860s, the latest from 1906, the painter’s final year.

Cézanne is most often chosen for his quiet, earthy range of colour, which sits well with wood, stone and natural fabrics, and for motifs that do not raise their voice: fruit on a table, a house among trees, a face in thought. Among the most sought after are The Basket of Apples, The Card Players (Metropolitan) and Mont Sainte-Victoire.

Every reproduction is hand-painted to order, from €108. Every hand-painted painting on canvas can be stretched on a wooden stretcher frame and is ready to hang. With our 3D application you can choose a frame, which the application renders realistically. We also help with visualisation: before you buy, we place the painting on your own wall.
