In the spring of 1883, Seurat began work on his first large-format painting, Bathers at Asniers. The present painting is one of the studies that the artist painted in preparation for the large canvas. The painting shows male figures bathing on the banks of the Seine and observing the nearby island of La Grande Jatte from the river (this served as a motif for the painter’s next major work). Seurat’s depiction of bathers is detached and almost impersonal.
