The painting Circus Sideshow is one of six paintings of large figures that Seurat created in his short career. This image is more compact than the others and also more mysterious.
The artist created the sketches for this painting in the spring of 1887 while visiting a traveling circus in Paris – he then refined the composition through several preparatory studies. The painting Circus Sideshow is the first important painting in which Seurat devoted himself to the field of popular entertainment.
