The painter spent the late summer and early autumn of 1881 in the village of Pontaubert, southeast of Paris, where other artists of the Barbizon School also gathered. The artist completed the painting In the Woods at Pontaubert the following winter in the studio he shared with his traveling companion and former classmate Ama-Jean. The painting shows Seurat’s technique, which is already slowly progressing into pointillism.
