The painting Lady with a Monkey is a study that the painter painted for the larger canvas Sunday Afternoon on the Island of la Grande Jatte. The inclusion of a monkey on a leash in the painting is Seurat’s way of satirically depicting Parisian society, as the woman holding the monkey on a leash is supposed to be a prostitute.
