The oil on canvas Fatata te Miti was painted by Gauguin during his first visit to Tahiti. In the painting, the painter depicted life on the island very directly. One of the two female figures in the painting removes her dress to join her friend, who is shown entering the sea. Nearby, a male figure is fishing with a spear. Intense tropical colors – strong orange and cool blue shades – conjure up sensuality. This is the simple and unspoiled paradise that Gauguin expected, but did not see, in the South Seas.
