Black Relief – scales, fans and one sharp fold
A monochrome graphite-anthracite relief that lives on form and light alone: from a field of overlapping scales, descending like a downturned triangle from the top edge to the middle of the canvas, large ribbed fans open on three sides.
Technique & Texture
The largest fan radiates from the right middle toward the upper right corner, a second from a node left of centre toward the lower left, a third from the lower centre downward. This is a hand-painted work of art – the relief is deep and every ridge carries a silvered rim of light.
The Motif
Right of centre, in the lower half, the layers break sharply into a zigzag fold zone – the only sharp cut among the soft arcs. The painting changes with the light: in the morning it shows the scales, in the evening the shadows between the ribs.
