Edgar Degas – portrait of the painter

“It is a transformation during which imagination collaborates with memory.”

Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was born in Paris into an influential French banking family and is considered a master of depicting the human body in motion. He worked mainly in oil on canvas and pastel, often associated with the Impressionists and exhibited alongside them, yet developed a style entirely his own. He died in Paris, leaving behind more than 2,000 oils on canvas and pastels.

Ballet, the main motif from the early 1870s

In the early 1870s ballerinas became his central subject. He liked to sketch live at the ballet stage and finish the work in the studio, which is why these paintings have their characteristic harmony of line and continuity of contour. On this shelf they are led by Dancers at the Barre, Two Dancers, Ballet Dancers in the Wings and The Dance Class.

Italy in 1856, and the classical schooling

In 1856 he travelled to Italy, where he spent three years studying chiefly the Renaissance. After returning to Paris he combined classical and romantic painting styles in his portraits, and gave his early years to large historical scenes – among them Young Spartans Exercising and David and Goliath.

The pulse of everyday life

Besides the ballet he liked to paint racehorses, and later the pulse of everyday life: cafés, laundries, and the moments when nobody is posing. His art was influenced above all by the new science of photography and by Japanese colour prints, which impressed him with their unexpected angles, compositions without a centre, and unpainted space. That way of looking carries The Absinthe Drinker and Seated Dancer Adjusting Her Shoes.

Our reproductions

Every painting on this shelf is a hand-painted oil painting on canvas. Each canvas is painted individually, in the size and frame you choose. The painter works from the original with brush and oils, so the strokes and the layering stay visible – the part a print cannot reproduce.
