Klimt’s periods – and what you will find in our gallery

From academic decoration to gold and then to strong colour: choose a period first and the painting second.

The early, academic years (1880s–1890s)

With his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch, the young Klimt painted decorations for theatres and palaces, among them the ceilings of the staircases of the Burgtheater in Vienna (1886–1888). For Martin Gerlach’s pattern book Allegories and Emblems he painted Idyll (1884) and Love (1895), and Music I (1895), painted in oil with gold bronze, was an early step towards his gold.

The Vienna Secession and the Beethoven Frieze

In 1897 Klimt co-founded the Vienna Secession and became its first president. Pallas Athena (1898) was shown at the second Secession exhibition, Hygieia comes from his University painting Medicine, and for the 14th Secession exhibition in 1902 he painted the Beethoven Frieze, which can still be seen in the basement of the Secession building. The Golden period (about 1903–1909)

The son of a gold engraver, Klimt saw the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna in 1903 and began to paint with gold. This is the period of The Kiss (1907–1909, Belvedere, Vienna), Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907, Neue Galerie, New York), Danae (1907), The Three Ages of Woman (1905, Rome) and Tree of Life from the Stoclet Frieze. Judith I (1901) already shines with gold, and so does the later Judith II (Salome) (1909, Ca’ Pesaro, Venice). On our copies these gold areas are painted by hand in gold paint.

Landscapes

Klimt painted his landscapes on square canvases during his summer stays, mostly at Lake Attersee in Upper Austria, and in 1913 at Lake Garda. From these summers come Farm Garden with Sunflowers, Poppy Field (1907, Belvedere), Forest of Beech Trees, The Park (MoMA, New York) and Malcesine on Lake Garda, whose original has been lost since 1945. The gallery also has Flower Garden, Apple Tree II and Blooming Meadow.

Late portraits and allegories

After 1910 the gold disappears and strong colour takes its place: Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II (1912), The Virgin (1913, National Gallery Prague), Death and Life (1910/11, reworked 1915/16, Leopold Museum, Vienna) and The Dancer (1916–1917), whose lower part remained unfinished. Portrait of a Lady (Ricci Oddi) was stolen in Piacenza in 1997 and found again in 2019. Among the last works is also Baby (Cradle), which remained unfinished.

Which Klimt suits which room?

Above a sofa or a bed, the square landscapes work especially well – their originals measure about 110 x 110 cm, and a square brings calm to a long wall. Choose a painting about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it; for a three-seater sofa that usually means 120 to 160 cm. Tall, narrow formats such as Judith II (Salome) or The Dancer fit the narrow wall between two doors or windows.

The Kiss is the classic for a bedroom and a favourite gift for a wedding or an anniversary. Hang the painting so that its centre sits about 150 cm above the floor; above a sofa, leave 20 to 30 cm between the back of the sofa and the lower edge of the canvas.

How we hand-paint a Klimt

Every painting is painted by hand in oil on canvas, layer by layer, following a high-resolution photograph of the original. On Golden-period works the painter applies the gold by hand in gold paint, ornament by ornament, so that it catches the light much as Klimt’s gold does. If something in the final photograph is not right, we correct it before dispatch.

Gustav Klimt in brief

Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 in Baumgarten near Vienna, the son of a gold engraver, and studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule). In 1897 he co-founded the Vienna Secession and became its first president. His lifelong companion was the fashion designer Emilie Flöge. He died in Vienna in February 1918. Which are Klimt’s most famous paintings?

The most famous is The Kiss (1907–1909) in the Belvedere in Vienna, followed by Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, Tree of Life, Judith I and Death and Life. All of them are available in our gallery as hand-painted oil paintings.

What does Klimt’s The Kiss mean?

It shows a couple embracing at the edge of a flowering meadow, wrapped in one golden cloak. His robe is patterned with black and white rectangles, hers with round, colourful flowers, so the two opposites merge into one form. It is read as an image of love and union, which is why it is so often given at weddings.

Why did Klimt use gold?

His father was a gold engraver, and in 1903 Klimt saw the Byzantine gold mosaics of Ravenna. Gold made his figures look precious and timeless, like icons. His Golden period lasted roughly from 1903 to 1909.

Can you buy an original Klimt, and what does a copy cost?

Original Klimt paintings sell for tens of millions: Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II was resold in 2016 for 150 million dollars, and Flower Garden fetched 47.9 million pounds at Sotheby’s in 2017. A hand-painted copy in oil on canvas from SvetSlik.si starts at 155 €, depending on the size you choose. It is a real painting, not a print.

Is the gold on your Klimt paintings real gold?

No – on our copies the gold is gold paint applied by hand, not gold leaf. The originals, such as The Kiss, were painted with real gold, silver and platinum leaf. Hand-applied gold paint lights up nicely when the light falls on it.

Which size should I choose?

Measure the furniture below the wall and choose a painting about two thirds of its width: above a three-seater sofa that is usually 120 to 160 cm, above a desk or in a hallway 50 to 70 cm. Square landscapes look good above a bed, tall formats on narrow walls. Every product page lists the available sizes with their prices, and if none fits, we paint your own measurements.

How long does delivery take, and can I order a custom size?

Each painting is painted to order, so delivery takes 15 to 45 days, depending on the size. A custom size is possible for every painting: send us the width and height and we paint the canvas to your measurements. Before dispatch you receive a photograph of the finished painting.
