Jackson Pollock – portrait of the painter

“The painting has a life of its own.”

    Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was an influential painter and one of the main representatives of the abstract expressionism movement.

At the beginning of his artistic career, he was interested in sculpture. Plastic exercises allowed him to discover himself and corresponded to his desire to create, to distinguish himself with something tangible. In addition to art, Jackson Pollock became interested in Far Eastern and Indian philosophy, and later he was also interested in Jung and psychoanalysis.

After 1935, he was most inspired by Picasso, Miró and the European surrealists. Jackson Pollock was introduced to the use of liquid colors in 1936 at an experimental workshop in New York. Later, he used the color fusion technique in his artworks in addition to other techniques. In the Springs, where he and his wife Lee Krasner moved after their marriage, he began painting on canvases laid on the studio floor, developing a technique that was later called the drip technique. With this technique, he was able to achieve a more direct creation where the paint literally flew from the chosen art tool to the canvas. Pollock‘s most famous paintings come from this “dripping period” between 1947 and 1950.

He died at the age of 44 in a car accident.

The drip paintings. No. 5, 1948 (1948), Autumn Rhythm: Number 30, 1950 (1950), Blue Poles: Number 11 (1952) and Lavender Mist: Number 1 (1950) are the poured paintings Pollock is known for: lines of paint dripped and poured onto a canvas laid on the floor. One: Number 31 (1950), Reflection of the Big Dipper (1947), Full Fathom Five (1947) and Convergence (1952) come from the same years. Our painters build up these lines by hand, layer by layer.

Before the drips. The Blue Unconscious (1946), Moon Woman (1942), The Tea Cup (1946), Male and Female (1942) and Pasiphaë (1943) show the thickly brushed figures, totems and signs of the early 1940s.

The early Pollock. Cotton Pickers and Woman come from his early years, when he still painted figures and the American countryside. All 40 Pollock studies are in the list on this page.

    What size to choose

Each Pollock study comes in 7 to 10 sizes, from about 40 × 50 cm to more than 5 metres for the big drip paintings; the exact sizes are on each painting’s page. Pollock painted many of his poured works very large: Autumn Rhythm and One: Number 31 are over five metres wide, so they look good large, along a long wall or above a sofa, where a painting about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it works well. Long formats such as Blue Poles suit a corridor or a long wall, upright ones such as Full Fathom Five a narrow wall between windows. Prices start at 108 €. If no size fits, we paint the painting to measure: see custom paintings. On request we also prepare a free preview of the painting in your room.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a study of a Jackson Pollock painting?

A copy painted by hand by a painter, not a print. Pollock’s drip technique, pouring paint onto a canvas laid on the floor, cannot be repeated drop for drop. That is why we call it a study: the finished painting is clearly recognisable, but not identical to the original in every detail.

Is the painting done in oil?

It depends on the work: some paintings we paint in oil, others in acrylic. Either way it is real paint, applied to the canvas by hand.

    How is the painting shipped?

Rolled in a tube, stretched on a frame (2.5 cm bars) or framed: you choose when you order. Stretching and framing are done in our workshop in Slovenia.

Do I see the painting before it ships?

Yes. When the painting is finished we send you a photo, and we ship it once you confirm.

How much does a Pollock study cost?

From 108 €. The price depends on the painting and the size you choose; each painting’s page shows the price for every size.

    How long does delivery take?

Every Pollock study is painted to order and arrives in 15 to 45 working days.

Are the drip paintings painted by hand too?

Yes. Our painters build up Pollock’s dripped and poured lines by hand, layer by layer, with liquid paint; it is never a print.
