Van Gogh painted with thick, raised brushstrokes, and so do we: our copies have real impasto – dense oil paint in which the brushstrokes stand up from the canvas.
Van Gogh’s periods – and what you will find in our gallery
Van Gogh painted for only about ten years, yet his style changed sharply in that time: from dark peasant scenes to the bright yellow of the south. Choose a period first and the painting second.
Nuenen and the dark years (1883–1885)
In the Dutch village of Nuenen Van Gogh painted peasants and their work in dark, earthy tones. The key work of these years is The Potato Eaters (April–May 1885), with which he set out to prove he could paint figures: coarse faces and bony hands of people who had honestly earned their food. Still Life with Bible was painted in October 1885, a few months after the death of his father, a Protestant minister.
Antwerp and Paris (1886–1888)
In early 1886 Van Gogh studied at the academy in Antwerp, where he painted the joking Skull with Burning Cigarette. He then moved in with his brother Theo in Paris, discovered the Impressionists and Japanese woodblock prints, and his palette grew lighter. In 1886 he painted A Pair of Shoes, worn work shoes bought at a flea market. Courtesan (after Eisen) (1887) is an enlarged copy of a Japanese woodcut by Keisai Eisen, and Self-Portrait as an Artist (December 1887 – February 1888) is his last Paris work.
Arles and the yellow south (February 1888 – May 1889)
In Arles, in the south of France, Van Gogh painted his brightest canvases. The Harvest dates from June 1888, and in the same year he painted Fishing Boats on the Beach at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer on the Mediterranean coast. In September 1888 came the night scenes Café Terrace at Night and Starry Night over the Rhône. The Yellow House shows the house where he rented four rooms, and Bedroom in Arles (October 1888) his bedroom inside it. He described the room in The Night Café as a place of “the terrible passions of humanity”.
To decorate the Yellow House before Paul Gauguin arrived, he painted sunflowers: Sunflowers I, with 15 blooms, hangs in the National Gallery in London, and Sunflowers II, with 12 blooms on a blue-green ground, in Munich. The gallery has the sunflowers in four more versions: Three Sunflowers in a Vase from August 1888 and the repetitions he painted in Arles, Sunflowers (Amsterdam Version), Sunflowers (Tokyo Version) and Sunflowers (Philadelphia Version). Gauguin stayed with him for nine weeks from late October 1888; in that time came Van Gogh’s Chair and Paul Gauguin’s Armchair, a pair meant to hang together, and The Sower with its huge lemon-yellow sun. In November 1888 he painted The Red Vineyard, and after the crisis of December 1888 he painted Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear in January 1889. Between December 1888 and January 1889 he also painted La Berceuse (Augustine Roulin), a portrait of the wife of the postman Joseph Roulin.
Saint-Rémy and the asylum (May 1889 – May 1890)
In May 1889 Van Gogh entered the asylum at Saint-Rémy, where he painted in the garden and the countryside around it. In the very first week he began Irises (now in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles), and in June 1889 he painted The Starry Night, which hangs in MoMA in New York. Cypresses and A Wheat Field with Cypresses come from the same year. He also painted free copies after other artists, such as Pietà (after Delacroix). In February 1890 he painted Almond Blossom for his newborn nephew, who had been named after him. Saint-Rémy also gave Self-Portrait with Swirling Background and Bedroom in Arles (Third Version), both from September 1889; this time he painted the bedroom smaller, for his mother and sister.
Auvers-sur-Oise and the last weeks (May – July 1890)
Van Gogh spent his last weeks in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, in the care of the doctor Paul Gachet; in June 1890 he painted Portrait of Dr. Gachet. The same month he painted Poppy Field. Wheat Field with Crows dates from July 1890 and is often called his last painting, but the Van Gogh Museum calls that story a myth, because he painted several more works after it. The unfinished Tree Roots is thought to be probably his last. Van Gogh died on 29 July 1890.
The most famous Van Gogh paintings at SvetSlik.si
The most searched painting is The Starry Night, followed closely by Starry Night over the Rhône (Musée d’Orsay, Paris) and Fishing Boats on the Beach at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Next come Sunflowers I, Skull with Burning Cigarette, Self-Portrait as an Artist and Sunflowers II.
Also among the most searched are Irises, The Potato Eaters, The Night Café, A Pair of Shoes, Almond Blossom, Wheat Field with Crows, Bedroom in Arles and Café Terrace at Night.
Which Van Gogh suits which room?
Above a sofa or a bed, landscapes and night scenes in wide formats work best, such as Starry Night over the Rhône or A Wheat Field with Cypresses. Choose a painting about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it. Sunflowers and irises bring light to a dining room and to bright walls, while portraits and still lifes such as Self-Portrait as an Artist or A Pair of Shoes suit a study or a narrow wall.
Almond Blossom is the classic gift for the birth of a child, because Van Gogh painted it for his newborn nephew. Hang the painting so that its centre sits about 150 cm above the floor; above a sofa, leave 20 to 30 cm between the back of the sofa and the lower edge of the canvas.
Sizes, prices, custom size, stretcher and frame
Each painting has its own range of sizes, matched to the proportions of the original, and the product page shows the price of every size. Across the gallery there are 329 formats, from 25 x 32 cm to 250 x 180 cm, and prices start at 155 €. If your wall needs a different measurement, send us the width and height: we paint to your own size. Every canvas comes stretched on a wooden stretcher, ready to hang without a frame, and a frame is available on request.
For the frame, use our 3D application: it shows our frame profiles on the painting you choose – the application is for choosing the frame only. If you would like to see how the painting will look on your own wall, that is our separate room placement service. For a gift, a wall art voucher lets the recipient choose the painting and the size.
How we hand-paint a Van Gogh
Every painting is painted by hand in oil on canvas, layer by layer. With Van Gogh the brushstrokes are part of the work, so the painter lays them on in thick paint, stroke by stroke – real impasto that you can see and feel with your fingers.
On the pages of Almond Blossom and Sunflowers I you will find a video of a copy we have painted. We ship across the EU and to the United Kingdom; the canvas is wrapped in protective film and packed in a sturdy box.

Frequently asked questions
What is Van Gogh’s most famous painting?
The most famous is The Starry Night (1889, MoMA, New York), followed by Sunflowers (1888), Café Terrace at Night, Bedroom in Arles, The Potato Eaters and Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. All of them are available in our gallery as hand-painted oil paintings.
How many paintings did Van Gogh paint, and how many did he sell in his lifetime?
In about ten years he painted about 860 oil paintings. He sold very few in his lifetime; one sale is well documented, The Red Vineyard, bought in Brussels in 1890 by the Belgian painter Anna Boch for 350 or 400 francs, depending on the source.
Why did Van Gogh cut off his ear?
In December 1888 in Arles, after a heated quarrel with Paul Gauguin, he cut off his left ear, or most of it. The exact reason is not known; the act is linked to the severe mental crisis of those months. A few weeks later, in January 1889, he painted Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.
Where can you see Van Gogh’s original paintings?
The largest collection is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo also holds a large one. The Starry Night is in MoMA in New York, Starry Night over the Rhône in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and Sunflowers in the National Gallery in London.
Did Van Gogh paint The Scream?
No – The Scream was painted by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in 1893, three years after Van Gogh’s death. You will find a similar intensity in Van Gogh too, for example in Wheat Field with Crows under its dark sky or in the swirling sky of The Starry Night.
How much is an original Van Gogh worth, and what does a copy cost?
The originals are almost all in museums, and at auction they reach tens of millions: the Portrait of Doctor Gachet sold in 1990 for 82.5 million dollars, then a record. A hand-painted copy in oil on canvas from SvetSlik.si starts at 155 €; the price depends on the size you choose.
Is your Van Gogh a print?
No – every painting is painted by hand in oil on canvas; it is not a print or a poster. The painter applies the paint in thick strokes, so the copy has real impasto that you can see and feel.
Which size should I choose?
Measure the furniture below where the painting will hang and choose a painting about two thirds of its width: above a three-seater sofa that is usually 120 to 160 cm, above a desk or in a hallway 50 to 70 cm. Wide landscapes belong above a sofa or a bed, portraits and still lifes on narrower walls. Every product page lists the available sizes with their prices, and if none fits, we paint it to your measurements.
How long does delivery take, and can I order a custom size?
Each painting is painted to order, so delivery takes 15 to 45 days, depending on the size. A custom size is possible for every painting: send us the width and height and we paint the canvas to your measurements. Before dispatch you receive a photograph of the finished painting.
