The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa – the two most searched
The Last Supper is a mural that Leonardo painted between about 1495 and 1498 on the wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. It shows the moment Christ announces that one of the apostles will betray him, and the twelve react in groups of three. The original is about 4.6 metres high and 8.8 metres wide, so our copies follow its wide format: a long painting above a dining table or a sideboard is the classic choice.
Mona Lisa hangs in the Louvre in Paris. Leonardo began it in Florence in the early 1500s and kept working on it for years; its soft transitions of light and shadow, called sfumato, are what our painters work hardest to reproduce. For a portrait like this, a smaller upright format works well in a study, a hallway or a bedroom.

Portraits
Besides the Mona Lisa we paint Portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, the young woman holding an ermine, La Belle Ferronnière, Ginevra de’ Benci, his only painting in the Americas, and Portrait of a Musician. La Scapigliata is a small, unfinished head of a young woman, and Self-Portrait is based on the famous red-chalk drawing believed to show Leonardo in old age.
Madonnas and religious paintings
Leonardo painted the Virgin many times: The Virgin of the Rocks, The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, The Benois Madonna, The Madonna Litta, The Madonna of the Carnation, The Madonna of the Yarnwinder and The Virgin and Child (Detail). From his early years in Florence come The Annunciation, The Baptism of Christ, which he painted with his master Verrocchio, and the unfinished The Adoration of the Magi. Saint Jerome in the Wilderness and Saint John the Baptist show his interest in strong light and shadow. Salvator Mundi, Christ as Saviour of the World, became famous in 2017 as the most expensive painting ever sold at auction.

The Last Supper belongs above a dining table, a sideboard or a long sofa, where its wide format can breathe. Portraits such as Mona Lisa, Portrait of Cecilia Gallerani or Ginevra de’ Benci suit a study, a hallway or a bedroom. The Madonnas, The Annunciation and Salvator Mundi are a natural choice for a quiet room or as a gift for a christening, a wedding or a first communion. Choose a painting about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, and hang it so that its centre sits about 150 cm above the floor.

How we hand-paint a Leonardo
Every painting is painted to order by hand in oil or acrylic on canvas, layer by layer, by our painters, who work in different locations. With Leonardo the challenge is sfumato: the soft, smoky transitions between light and shadow are built up in thin layers, and the faces need patience and a fine brush. Because each canvas is painted by hand, every copy is slightly different. Stretching and framing are done in our workshop in Slovenia, and you choose how the painting is sent: rolled, stretched on a wooden stretcher ready to hang, or framed. Before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished painting, and if something is not right, we correct it before the painting is sent.
