Dancing, boating and Sunday in Paris
Renoir was the Impressionist of people enjoying themselves. Dance at the Moulin de la Galette (1876, Musée d’Orsay) shows a Sunday afternoon dance in Montmartre under the trees, with sunlight falling in patches on the dancers. Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880–81) gathers his friends on the terrace of the Restaurant Fournaise at Chatou on the Seine; the young woman with the little dog on the left is Aline Charigot, who later became his wife. The original hangs in the Phillips Collection in Washington.
In 1883 he painted three tall dance scenes: Dance at Bougival, Dance in the City and Dance in the Country. City and Country were made as a pair and hang side by side in the Musée d’Orsay – one couple in evening dress, the other in a summer garden – and they work just as well as a pair on one wall at home. Paris itself appears in Le Pont Neuf, The Umbrellas and At the Theatre (La Première Sortie), and the river life of the Seine in La Grenouillère, which he painted side by side with Claude Monet in 1869.
Portraits of women and children
Two Sisters (On the Terrace) (1881, Art Institute of Chicago) is one of his best-loved paintings: a young woman and a little girl on a terrace above the river at Chatou. Madame Georges Charpentier and Her Children (1878, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) brought him his first great success at the Salon of 1879. Girls at the Piano (1892) was the first work by Renoir bought by the French state and is in the Musée d’Orsay. Women bathing in the open air occupied Renoir for thirty years, from The Large Bathers (1884–87, Philadelphia Museum of Art) to The Bathers (1918–19, Musée d’Orsay), painted in the last months of his life. His flower and fruit paintings – A Bouquet of Roses, Chrysanthemums and Still Life with Peaches – were where he tried out colour most freely. Among the landscapes are Path Leading through Tall Grass, Woman with a Parasol in a Garden, Garden in the Rue Cortot from his garden in Montmartre, The Wave, The Harvesters and The Piazza San Marco, Venice from his journey to Italy in 1881. Which Renoir suits which room?
The big group scenes – Luncheon of the Boating Party and Dance at the Moulin de la Galette – belong in a dining room or a living room, where people sit at a table together; they need size, so choose at least 100 cm in width so that the faces do not disappear. The dancing couples suit a bedroom or a hallway, and Dance in the City and Dance in the Country can hang as a pair. Flowers and still lifes bring warmth to a kitchen or a dining room, the bathers suit a bedroom or a bathroom, and the girls in Two Sisters (On the Terrace) or Girls at the Piano work well in a child’s room or a music room. Choose a painting about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, and hang it so that its centre sits about 150 cm above the floor.

How we hand-paint a Renoir
Every painting is painted to order by hand in oil on canvas, layer by layer, by our painters, who work in different locations. With Renoir the work is in the colour and the light: his forms are built from soft, feathery strokes laid wet into wet, his shadows are blue, violet or green rather than black, and his skin tones glow from many thin layers. Because each canvas is painted by hand, every copy is slightly different. Stretching and framing are done in our workshop in Slovenia, and you choose how the painting is sent: rolled, stretched on a wooden stretcher ready to hang, or framed. Before dispatch we send you a photograph of the finished painting, and if something is not right, we correct it before the painting is sent.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir in brief
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born on 25 February 1841 in Limoges and grew up in Paris, where at thirteen he began as an apprentice painting porcelain. In the studio of Charles Gleyre he met Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Frédéric Bazille, and in 1874 he showed with them at the first Impressionist exhibition. In his later years, in spite of severe rheumatoid arthritis, he went on painting at Les Collettes, his house at Cagnes-sur-Mer, where he died on 3 December 1919. Why are Renoir’s shadows blue and violet?
Like the other Impressionists, Renoir painted the colour he saw in shadow – the blue of the sky and the reflected colour of the surroundings – instead of darkening it with black. We keep these coloured shadows when we paint a copy, because they give his paintings their light.

Which size should I choose?
Measure the furniture below where the painting will hang and choose a painting about two thirds of its width: above a three-seater sofa that is usually 120 to 160 cm, above a desk or in a hallway 50 to 70 cm. Scenes with many figures need a larger size than a portrait or a still life. If none of the listed sizes fits, we paint the painting in your size.

As you choose: rolled, stretched on a wooden stretcher and ready to hang, or framed. Stretching and framing are done in our workshop in Slovenia, and the painting is wrapped in protective film and packed in a sturdy box.
