“In art, as in nature, what we are tempted to take for novelty is, at bottom, only a more or less modified continuation.”
Renoir reproductions, hand-painted in oil on canvas
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was the French Impressionist most drawn to people: dancing, lunch by the river, portraits of children, the bathers. This selection holds 76 subjects, and each one is an oil painting on canvas made by hand – oil paint laid on stroke by stroke to your order. It is not a print and not a machine copy. Prices start at 108 EUR and depend on the size and proportion you choose.
What Renoir painted
Renoir’s output reads most usefully as a set of recurring families: scenes of sociable life, portraits of children and young women, the bathers, flower pieces and gardens, and landscape – the Seine at Chatou and later the olive groves of the south. For choosing a reproduction this grouping is more practical than a list of titles, since a dancing scene occupies a wall quite differently from a quiet still life. The largest Renoir collection anywhere belongs to the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia: 181 works, assembled by Albert C. Barnes between 1912 and 1942.
How your painting is made
Every painting is made to order. A painter works in oil on canvas, load after load. With Renoir that distinction matters more than usual: his form does not rest on drawing but on the relationships between strokes of colour. The paint is thin, feathery and often worked wet into wet, and he paints shadow in colour – blue, violet, green – rather than with black. A print cannot reproduce that, because what carries it is the thickness and direction of the paint, not a pattern.
How to choose a size
One rule covers most cases: a scene with many figures needs more wall so the individual faces do not disappear, while a portrait or a still life holds up well in a smaller format. We keep the proportion close to the original, because Renoir’s compositions do not take cropping gracefully. Every reproduction is available in several sizes and proportions.
