“I felt the great scream through nature.”
Edvard Munch
This collection holds 21 hand-painted Edvard Munch reproductions, each worked in oil on canvas and made to order, from 108 EUR. Munch (1863-1944) was a Norwegian painter who painted inner states rather than scenes – love, anxiety, illness and death – and is counted among the fathers of expressionism.
The collection includes The Scream, which became a universal sign of modern anxiety, along with Madonna, Ashes, Winter Night and the late Self-Portrait by the Window. Munch repeated his motifs: he painted the same scene again and again, each time in a different palette and format, so with him a second version is a new work rather than a copy.
Every painting in this collection is painted entirely by hand, in oil on canvas – it is not a print and not a machine reproduction. Because each canvas is made for your order, tones and brushwork differ slightly between copies, much as they differ between Munch’s own versions of one motif. Several sizes are available, and we will also make a painting to a measurement you specify.
Munch often worked on unprimed or only thinly primed canvas, laying the paint on thin and fast so the weave stays visible; the 1893 Scream is not oil on canvas at all but tempera and oil crayon on cardboard. It is that surface which a hand-painted reproduction can carry and a print cannot, because printing turns every canvas into the same smooth sheet.
Before delivery you receive a photograph of the finished painting for approval; on request we adjust colours or details and ship only once you approve. Paintings can also be ordered framed – the frame itself is shown in the 3D viewer on the product page, while seeing the painting on your own wall is a separate visualisation service.
The Scream was made in Kristiania, the city renamed Oslo in 1925. More about the painter, his technique and the four versions of that motif is in our article on Edvard Munch. A canvas painting reproduction from this collection suits a living room, a bedroom or an office – anywhere with a quiet wall.
