La Scapigliata – the most mysterious unfinished head
La Scapigliata is a small painting with a large puzzle: the face of a young woman is worked to the last breath, while the shoulders, neck and background are barely indicated. Whether Leonardo left the work unfinished, or whether that very incompleteness is the point, scholars have disagreed for more than a century. Unfinished – or finished exactly like this
Leonardo painted La Scapigliata around 1506–1508. The face is modelled in soft transitions, the lids and lips fully worked, while the hair dissolves into emptiness in rough, almost angry strokes. Some scholars see simply an unfinished work, a kind of painted study or “painted drawing”. Others point out that the contrast between the finished face and the open ground is too effective to be accidental, and that the panel may have been deliberately left in this state. The question is not settled, and we do not present it as though it were.
What the painting shows
We see the head of a young woman, slightly inclined and turned downwards, with lowered lids and a barely perceptible smile. The Italian name scapigliata means dishevelled – after the hair falling beside her face in disordered strands. The expression is at once collected and absent; it is precisely this ambiguity that makes the work feel so modern. The original is painted in oil, umber and lead white on a poplar panel, measures only 24.7 × 21 cm, and is held in the Galleria Nazionale in Parma.
An attribution that was once withdrawn
Today the work is accepted as Leonardo’s, but the road there was not straight. In 1896 the museum’s director of the day declared it a forgery, and the painting was for a time reassigned to the “school of Leonardo”. Some researchers still leave it out of their catalogues, or see a pupil’s hand in it. Since 2003 major exhibitions have shown it again as Leonardo’s. This is therefore an accepted but not uncontested attribution – and that history is exactly what makes the painting more interesting.
