“All paintings are nothing but trifles, child’s play or bagatelles, whatever they show and whoever painted them, unless they are painted from life.”

The words at the top of this text were written about Caravaggio by Karel van Mander in 1604, while the painter was still alive: to him a painting was worth nothing unless it was painted from life. That is why his saints are people from the street, with dirty feet and real faces.
Caravaggio’s periods – and what you will find in our gallery
The first years in Rome (c. 1592–1599)
Michelangelo Merisi, named after his family’s home town of Caravaggio, came to Rome as a young painter and first painted smaller paintings with one or two figures. From these years come the Penitent Magdalene, a girl in a room with her jewels on the floor, and Narcissus, a young man bending over his reflection in dark water.
The great church commissions (1599–1606)
He became famous with the Contarelli Chapel in the Roman church of San Luigi dei Francesi, where The Calling of Saint Matthew still hangs: a ray of light falls through the window onto the tax collectors, and Christ points to Matthew. Then came The Conversion of Saint Paul, The Supper at Emmaus in the National Gallery in London, The Entombment of Christ in the Vatican Museums and Saint Jerome Writing in the Galleria Borghese.
Flight and the last years (1606–1610)
In 1606 Caravaggio killed a man in a brawl and had to flee Rome. He painted in Naples, on Malta and in Sicily, and died in 1610 on his way back towards Rome, aged 38.
The most famous Caravaggio paintings at SvetSlik.si
The best known is The Calling of Saint Matthew, one of the most famous paintings of the Baroque. For the home many choose The Supper at Emmaus, where Christ is recognised at the table, or the quieter Saint Jerome Writing, an old man with a book and a skull.
Which Caravaggio suits which room?
Caravaggio’s paintings are dark and full of contrast, so they need light: hang them next to a window or under a lamp. Large works such as The Calling of Saint Matthew and The Entombment of Christ need a tall wall, a staircase or a church space. Smaller paintings with a single figure, such as Narcissus, suit a bedroom or a study. Choose a painting about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
Sizes, prices, custom size, stretcher and frame
Each painting has its own range of sizes, matched to the proportions of the original, and the product page shows the price of every size. Across the gallery there are 232 formats, from 50 x 39 cm to 250 x 225 cm, and prices start at 900 €. If your wall needs a different measurement, send us the width and height: we paint to your own size. We send the painting rolled, stretched on a wooden stretcher bar or framed; you choose the frame in our 3D application, which is only for that. For a gift, there is the wall art voucher.
How do we hand-paint a Caravaggio?
Every painting is painted by hand in oil on canvas, layer by layer, following a high-resolution photograph of the original. With Caravaggio our painter starts from a deep dark ground and then builds up the lit faces, hands and fabrics on which the sharp light falls. If something in the final photograph is not right, we correct it before dispatch.
Caravaggio in brief
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was born in 1571 in Milan, worked mostly in Rome and died in 1610 in Porto Ercole. With a light that cuts sharply through the dark he influenced painters all over Europe, Rembrandt among them. Read more in the Caravaggio biography.
Frequently asked questions
Which are Caravaggio’s most famous paintings?
The most famous is The Calling of Saint Matthew in the Roman church of San Luigi dei Francesi, followed by The Supper at Emmaus, The Entombment of Christ and Narcissus. All of them are available in our gallery as hand-painted oil paintings.
Why are Caravaggio’s paintings so dark?
Because he left the background in almost black darkness and directed the light like a beam onto faces and hands. This style is called tenebrism. It makes the scene as dramatic as a stage.
Where can you see Caravaggio’s original paintings?
Most of them are in Rome: in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, the Galleria Borghese, the Galleria Doria Pamphilj and Palazzo Barberini. Other works are in the Vatican Museums and the National Gallery in London.
How much does a Caravaggio painting cost?
The originals are in churches and museums and are not for sale. A hand-painted copy in oil on canvas from SvetSlik.si starts at 900 €, depending on the painting and the size. It is a real painting, not a print.
Who are the people in Caravaggio’s paintings?
Often people from the streets of Rome who sat for him. That is exactly why his saints look so real, with tired faces and dirty feet.
Which size should I choose?
Measure the furniture below the wall and choose a painting about two thirds of its width. Every painting’s page lists all its sizes with their prices, and if none fits, we paint your own measurements.
Do you have his religious paintings for a church or chapel?
Yes, The Calling of Saint Matthew, The Entombment of Christ and The Conversion of Saint Paul are also painted in large sizes suitable for churches and chapels.
How long does delivery take, and can I order a custom size?
Each painting is painted to order, so delivery takes 15 to 45 working days. A custom size is possible for every painting, and before dispatch you receive a photograph of the finished painting.
