Description
The Last Supper: a hand-painted copy of Leonardo’s painting for dining rooms
Our Last Supper painting is a hand-painted copy of the mural by Leonardo da Vinci: Jesus in red and blue sits at the centre of the long white table, with the apostles in groups of three and three windows behind them. It is painted in 6 landscape sizes, from 100 x 50 to 300 x 150 cm. Above a 180 cm dining table, choose 120 x 60 cm, about two thirds of the table length, and over a 200 cm sofa choose 140 x 70 cm. The large 200 x 100 and 300 x 150 cm sizes are meant for a long dining-room or hallway wall.
Choose YES under Stretcher and the Last Supper canvas arrives stretched on a wooden stretcher, ready to hang. A frame is optional: for the Last Supper painting the Frame menu starts at “Without frame”. Delivery takes 15–45 days. Every figure, the long table and the windows are hand-painted with a brush on canvas, so this copy is not a print.
What does The Last Supper show?
Leonardo painted the moment at supper when Jesus says that one of the apostles will betray him. Jesus sits calmly at the centre of the long table, and the apostles react in four groups of three: some rise, some question, some draw back. Judas leans back into the shadow, clutching the money bag. The three windows behind Jesus open onto a landscape and frame his head with light. The original is a wall painting in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, painted by Leonardo in the 1490s.
Why is it such a favourite for dining rooms?
The Last Supper is a scene at a table, so it belongs most naturally where a family gathers to eat. The long landscape format matches a long dining table or a sideboard beneath it, and the muted browns, reds and blues sit well with wood. For many people it is also a blessing on the home, which is why it is often hung in a new flat or house.
How is our copy painted?
Our copy is hand-painted by our painters, with a brush on canvas, figure by figure. First come the architecture of the room and the table, then the groups of apostles with their gestures, and last the faces, the folds of the robes and the landscape in the windows. Because it is a hand-painted copy, the brushstrokes are visible on the canvas, and each painting comes out a little different from the last. When the copy is finished, we send you a photograph of it, and it ships only once you approve.
Rolled, stretched or framed?
We ship The Last Supper the way you choose: as a rolled canvas, stretched on a wooden stretcher bar, or framed. Stretcher and frame are fitted in our workshop in Slovenia. With YES under Stretcher it arrives ready to hang. In a classic dining room a gold or dark wood frame suits this scene, picked from the Frame menu; in a modern room the painting can also hang unframed.
How should I hang it and care for it?
Over a dining table, centre the painting on the table with its bottom edge 60 to 80 cm above the tabletop so it clears the light fitting; over a sideboard, keep the bottom edge 20 to 30 cm above the top. A dry soft cloth or a dusting brush is all the care it needs, without water or cleaners. In a dining room, hang it away from the cooker, steam and direct sun.
Is The Last Supper a suitable gift?
It makes a fitting gift for a housewarming, a wedding or a First Communion, because it carries meaning and dresses a wall at the same time. The entry size, 100 x 50 cm, fits above most chests of drawers and smaller tables. If you do not know their wall, give a gift voucher.
