Gold over the Dark – a sea force in three zones
Horizontal layers like a seascape: a great continent of leaf gold across the top, foamy white over black through the middle and bottom – gold over the dark: the hammered gold mass spans almost the full width with ragged edges, and above it a dark teal sky shows in the corners and at the left.
Technique & Texture
Dusty mauve-pink patches lie on the gold right of centre, and thin gold streaks fly off to the left. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – a broken band of white foam runs across the middle where the gold meets the dark, and deep teal water glints in the gap.
The Motif
The lower zone is a black field ploughed with heavy white impasto rows of surf, and along the bottom edge ochre-gold tufts flare up. The white thins toward the lower right – three registers, each running at its own speed: golden calm, foaming transition and dark chaos.
