The background is laid on like stucco, the jug bears a cracked relief surface, and from the top of the canvas long dark drips descend like a wet curtain. It is a hand-painted artistic painting – the video above (0:34) shows the framed Vase III on an easel among frame samples, then a palette knife dragging white across the red ground below the jug, close-ups of the raised spiral flowers, and finally the corner of the frame with the dark runs of paint.
The Motif
The blossoms are like coins from three families – golden ochre, cream white, and dark anthracite – scattered from the middle of the canvas upward, while tiny white droplets float above the mouth of the jug. The cream-white jug with its handle on the right is the central solid, bright form in a dark world; this very contrast gives the painting its quiet drama. Along the lower edge, a deep red horizontal band closes the whole – the painting’s only saturated colour accent.
