Description
Line – a rope between fire and light
Wall art divides the canvas with a rope-like line that crosses it and holds a fiery red field apart from a gold-ochre core — modern painting in which that line is not drawn at all but modelled from raised paint you can run a finger along. The red is densely textured, cut with deep incisions like cracked crust.
Technique and texture
The red fields are built with a chopped, heavy deposit in which the tool has left visible furrows. The ochre core is combed instead into concentric arcs that take the light at a different angle from everything around them. The rope is formed from a lifted ridge of colour rather than painted.
The motif
In the upper right there are three gold squares, each with a small bright dot at its centre, set at even intervals. The lower left is taken by pale silver fan shapes opening toward the bottom. Above and left of centre sits a dark olive organic mass, the only cool place on an otherwise heated canvas.
Setting and placement
This one carries a large empty wall and does not need neighbours. The warm palette answers to wood, brick and leather — a living room, a dining room, a foyer.
