White Cross – channels of light through the black
An almost black field cut by white channels: a vertical white passage right of centre runs from a good third of the height to the bottom, and white horizontal arms bite into it from left and right at different heights – together they form a rough cross or window sitting right of centre at mid-height.
Technique & Texture
The black masses have soft edges and a deep navy-blue shimmer within – this is not flat blackness but a nocturnal one. This is a hand-painted work of art – the transitions between black and white are blown open, as if light truly shone through the gaps.
The Motif
The arms of the cross are not aligned: the left band lies higher, the right lower, which gives the composition its tension. At the lower right of centre a large soft white zone spreads out, and in the lower left corner rests a white arc – a sickle or the rim of a bowl, which can also be read as a moon above the blackness.
Styling & Placement
A dramatic decorative painting for living rooms, offices and masculine work corners; against a white wall the blackness gains a frame, against a dark one the white channels blaze.
