Stories IV – an orange flash in a tiled wall
Painting on canvas stacks rectangular blocks of worked surface until they read as the tiles of an old wall, white and grey and gold-brown, with darker, almost scorched passages running down the middle: wall art assembled the way a collage is, layer over part-dried layer. Twice in the upper third an orange-red accent appears, the only loud colour on the canvas.
Technique and texture
Layers are laid, allowed to dry partly and covered again, so lower colours show through the cracks. Leaf and branch motifs are pressed into the white mass while it is still soft, which makes them impressions rather than drawings. The right edge carries a wide vertical band of rust-brown that closes the composition off.
The motif
The central band is the densest: dark patches, small circles and square inserts crowd together like the remains of lettering or seals. The motifs do not repeat on a beat — they gather, thickly in the middle and sparsely toward the edges. There is no obvious top or bottom; it reads as a cut from a larger surface.
Setting and placement
A narrow upright shape gets on well between shelves, beside a window, or in a hallway where the wall is tall and tight. The earth palette answers to wood, brick and raw plaster.
