Description
Sea Fire – an orange core in the blue
Painting on canvas kindles an orange-red core in the middle of a deep blue-green field and draws it diagonally toward the lower edge: wall art in which fire and water are the same gesture at different temperatures.
Technique and texture
Layer on translucent layer makes the blue-green, and where they part a warmer ground shows through. Orange and yellow are laid dense with the blade and stand above the blue like embers. The bright band at the top is scratched into horizontal traces that give a sense of movement.
The motif
The core breaks up into single sparks toward the lower edge, so the movement does not die away all at once. The contrast between the cold blue and the hot orange is greatest at the centre and falls off toward the edges. Because there are no outlines the scene stays abstract, even while it recalls water and fire, and a pale cream-yellow band across the upper quarter behaves like open sky above the water.
Setting and placement
Saturated blue and a burning orange need neutral surroundings with no competing colour. On a light, unpatterned wall the picture keeps all of its depth.
