Stories I – a turquoise plan seen from above
Painting on canvas maps white and turquoise into overlapping rectangles until the arrangement reads as an architectural plan seen from above — modern painting that stays just short of pure abstraction because one carved dark form anchors the lower left corner. Technique and texture
The white mass is knife-laid in thick flat slabs that cast their own shadow, and it is the most sculptural part of the piece. The turquoise passages are the opposite: thin, translucent, brushed wide over a pale ground. Along the bottom edge the paint has been allowed to run in rivulets.
The motif
Rectangles of different sizes overlap without settling into a rhythm, so the grid never becomes a pattern. The brown frames behave like walls and the turquoise planes like the open ground between them. The carved dark form at the lower left is the only figurative element and it stops the whole thing dissolving.
Setting and placement
A pale palette sits easily on a white or sand wall and adds no weight to the room. The upright shape suits a hallway, a bedroom or a study, where the turquoise reads as a welcome cool note.
