Description
In Space II – a written mark on emerald
Wall art lifts a pale calligraphic mark off a dark emerald-olive ground in the thickest relief on the canvas: abstract painting whose one gesture is legible as writing without belonging to any script. A combed band of close waves runs along the top edge, and a deep red horizontal strip closes the bottom third.
Technique and texture
The ground is built from several layers, scratched while drying and covered again, so tool marks and a lighter underlayer show through it. The mark itself is laid in an even, heavy deposit of gold-silver. The wave band at the top is raked while the paint is still soft, so the crests stay sharp.
The motif
The mark has two parts: an angular form on the left and an open arc on the right that drops away like the end of a brushstroke. A modelled flower sits under the mark in its own square recess, and one thin stem winds down from it over the red strip. The canvas therefore divides into three horizontal bands — waves, mark, red.
Setting and placement
A dark, held-back palette gets on with wood and warm white walls and quiets a room down. Give it a corner where nothing else is asking to be looked at.
