Description
Expression – a white spiral on wine
Wall art throws one white spiral across a dark wine ground and lets it break into droplets at the end of the arc, with no middle tones anywhere in between — painting on canvas built from a single gesture that could not be repeated and was not corrected. The ground behind carries vertical black striping.
Technique and texture
The white is laid with a great deal of paint at once, so a ridge gathers along the top of each stroke and casts its own shadow. The droplets are not random: they left the brush on the same swing and follow its direction outward. The surface underneath is painted in broad vertical bands of deep red and black that overlap in places to near-black.
The motif
The spiral winds outward from the middle through three or four turns and unravels into separate arcs toward the edge. Because the movement cannot be repeated, every arc is a different thickness — heaviest in the centre, thinnest where the brush had almost run out. Nothing else happens on the canvas; everything is subordinate to the one swing.
Setting and placement
A contrast this absolute is strongest on a pale, empty wall. One wall, nothing beside it, and the swing does the rest.
