Blue Squares – a hand-laid mosaic of the sea
A wall of turquoise squares on white grout: four rows of roughly four blocks each, but the grid is not strict – a narrow half-height square squeezes into the top row, and in the second row the right block reads as a fused pair, so there are about seventeen in all. It is precisely this irregularity that tells you a hand laid the wall.
Technique & Texture
Each square has its own surface: horizontal knife ridges, crumpled foil texture, soft glazes. This is a hand-painted work of art – the painter composed the sea square by square, letting each keep its own character.
The Motif
The shades run from vivid turquoise at the lower left through mid teal, sage grey and slate to almost grey; the darkest blocks sit at the upper right and the lower middle. The white joints are uneven, plastered, with drips and dust – mortar, not a raster.
