In Space I – two flowers beside a night band
Wall art splits the canvas hard: the left third is a dark blue-black vertical band of close grooves, and everything to the right of it is bronze-olive and heavily scratched — painting on canvas in which two modelled flowers are all that is allowed to grow out of that worked surface. One sits in a square relief frame, the other on a thin stem below it.
Technique and texture
The left band is made with a comb pulled vertically through fresh dark paint, and the grooves run from the top edge to the bottom without a break. The right-hand surface is restless by comparison, weaving scratches, impressions and show-through layers of bronze, olive and grey. The flowers are built from dense spiral deposits that stand above the plane.
The motif
The stems of both flowers drop as thin wavering lines and almost reach the bottom edge. In the upper right there is a raised silver frame with a spiral ornament, and beneath it a horizontal batten that props it. The vertical band makes the composition markedly lopsided, and the silver element on the far side is what steadies it.
Setting and placement
The piece is dark and reticent, so it wants a pale wall and not much company. An upright format suits a doorway, a hall, or a living room furnished with materials rather than colour.
