Success – a flash across indigo depth
Wall art raises a broad pale form out of an indigo and copper ground and opens it in every direction, its centre the brightest point on the canvas: modern painting in which light appears to be coming through the dark rather than sitting on top of it. What lies behind is densely worked, with layers, incised signs and organic traces.
Technique and texture
The pale form is the thickest paint in the piece — thrown on with a spatula and standing several millimetres proud in places. The backing is the opposite, built in thin translucent layers that break through one another and give the depth. Fine incisions run over the whole surface and only appear from close to.
The motif
The form spreads on the diagonal with three longer arms reaching toward the edges and a dense, cracked middle. Around it the ground darkens to blue-black. The bottom third is the darkest passage and it anchors the composition firmly.
Setting and placement
A palette this dark needs either a bright room or a dark wall that will take it. It suits a living room, a study, or a space with dark furniture.
