Bands of Night – five layers between shore and sky
A very tall, narrow format and five horizontal layers of a night shore: a velvety near-black band of sky across the upper third, beneath it a white impasto band, then a brushed blue-grey gradient of sea under night light, then a slightly tilted band of leaf gold, and the bottom is closed by a white cracked plaster field with grey veins.
Technique & Texture
Each layer has its own material: velvet, impasto, gradient, gold, cracked plaster. This is a hand-painted work of art – the golden band is a warm gleam whose lower edge dips slightly on the right, as if the tide had bent it.
The Motif
In the white band, along its lower middle and to the right, lies a cluster of black smudges – the edge of a cloud or the silhouette of a ship on a bright horizon, the only narrative in an otherwise pure geometry. The blue-grey band beneath it lightens toward the bottom – the sea catching the last light.
