Guernica is a 1937 painting by Pablo Picasso, held by the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid: a huge black-and-white cry against the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica. What does Guernica show?
Guernica shows, from left to right, a bull above a mother holding her dead child, a wounded horse in the centre, a light bulb shaped like an eye, a woman reaching through a window with a lamp and a woman with raised arms in a burning building; below lies a fallen soldier with a broken sword and a small flower. Picasso painted it in answer to the bombing of the town in 1937, which is why Guernica became one of the great symbols against war all over the world.
