Fragments of Faces – a cubist mask frieze
An extreme panorama – a cubist mask frieze of fragmented faces, eyes and signs in teal, blue, orange, yellow, red, green and violet: a large blue head in profile with one enormous eye with a green iris is at the left, beside it a halved taupe-gold disc in the lower left corner and an orange zigzag totem column.
Technique & Texture
At the centre-left is a quadrant face in violet and green with a red-ringed spiral rosette in place of an eye, and beneath it a green profile face with pink lips. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – a large yellow-gold triangle at the centre-right is filled with dark pictograms: a bird, a musical note and letter-like signs, the most distinctive event of the frieze.
The Motif
To the right is another face fragment with an arched eye over maroon and violet blocks, an orange crescent in the upper right corner, a fine colour grid at the right edge and a white claw-like hand at the lower right. Fragments of faces in the cubist and African mask tradition, where hidden figures reveal themselves only to a careful gaze.
