Blossom II – slices turning around a grey core
Wall art rakes pink, coral and cream slices of paint around a grey core set left of centre: abstract painting whose subject is not a flower but the act of loading a blade and lifting it away.
Technique and texture
Each slice was laid once and never corrected, so every one throws a shadow of its own and the edges curl where the blade left. The colour goes on thick and unmixed — pink stays pink where it touches cream. Underneath, the ground was combed into parallel furrows running the same way as the turn, and the slices cover those furrows without ever flattening them.
The motif
The slices lengthen and thin out as they move from the core toward the edges, which is why the turn looks as though it is still widening. The core is small and darker than anything around it, made from a few short crossing strokes. No arc ever closes, so the shape stays open and never resolves into a flower.
Setting and placement
Relief is the actual subject here and only raking light draws it; under flat light the canvas gives up most of what it has. Hang it where light arrives from one side and the picture will keep changing as the day moves.
