Description
Egon Schiele – House Wall (Windows)
Egon Schiele – House Wall (Windows), 1914
This hand-painted Egon Schiele painting, House Wall (Windows), is an oil reproduction of a façade scene from 1914. The original is held at the Belvedere in Vienna.
The scene
A plastered, cracked wall fills almost the whole picture, pierced by irregularly placed windows. Every window is different — some open, some closed, each in its own colour. Only a narrow strip along the lower edge suggests depth, so the scene turns into an almost abstract pattern.
Krumau
The motif is most likely a house in Krumau (today Český Krumlov), the birthplace of Schiele’s mother. The work belongs to the painter’s series of façades and townscapes.
Paint like plaster
To heighten the tactile effect of the surface, Schiele mixed his paint so that it imitates the rough plaster of a real house wall.
The original’s medium and format
The original is oil on canvas, measuring 111 × 142 cm (Belvedere, inv. 4278).
Provenance and where it is
The painting was owned by the painter and collector Hans Böhler (already before 1917); the Belvedere purchased it from Böhler in New York in 1948. It is now at the Upper Belvedere.
