Cardinal shows a round-faced cardinal against a dark ground, in a red cap with a tassel, a red cape with a row of buttons and a wide white lace surplice; in one hand he holds a tall golden crozier, and a rosary hangs from the other. Botero painted church dignitaries with serious faces and quiet irony, which is why Cardinal feels solemn and gently comic at once.
