The Flame – Jackson Pollock
The Flame is a painting by Jackson Pollock from the mid-1930s: tongues of fire in red, orange, yellow and white leap across an almost black ground. We paint our hand-painted study of The Flame to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 60 × 40 cm to 200 × 130 cm or in a custom size. Before The Flame is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does The Flame show?
In The Flame light shapes break and twist like a fire rising from embers; in between, a reclining body seems to hide among the flames. The paint is laid on thickly, in quick, sharp brushstrokes. Pollock was still searching for his style and learning from the Mexican muralists, so The Flame is a step from figures towards abstraction, full of movement.
How is our hand-painted study of The Flame made?
Our painters paint the study of The Flame by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of The Flame has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When The Flame is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of The Flame suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose The Flame in 100 × 70 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 60 × 40 cm. The Flame is available in 60 × 40 cm, 70 × 45 cm, 76 × 51 cm, 90 × 60 cm, 100 × 70 cm, 130 × 90 cm, 160 × 110 cm and 200 × 130 cm. A simple rule for The Flame: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does The Flame arrive, and when?
We ship The Flame rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of The Flame are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of The Flame is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of The Flame painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
Frequently asked questions about The Flame
Is The Flame a print?
No. Every brushstroke of The Flame is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.
Can I order The Flame in a size that is not listed?
Yes. We also paint The Flame in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order The Flame.
Is The Flame abstract?
Almost. The Flame comes from Pollock’s early years; the fire is still recognisable, but the shapes are already so free that the painting can be seen as an abstract play of colours.
Is The Flame a good gift?
The Flame is a gift for a lover of Pollock, of warm, fiery colours or of dramatic paintings. If you are unsure which size of The Flame to choose, give a gift voucher.
