The Key – Jackson Pollock
The Key is a 1946 painting by Jackson Pollock, held by the Art Institute of Chicago: densely interlocking colour shapes in yellow, red, green, blue and white with thick black outlines. We paint our hand-painted study of The Key to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 70 × 50 cm to 210 × 148 cm or in a custom size. Before The Key is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does The Key show?
In The Key colourful shapes in yellow, orange, red, green, blue and white crowd and overlap across the whole canvas, edged with thick black and dark red strokes, with spirals, jagged patches and forms that recall faces and animals hidden among them. Pollock painted it just before he turned to dripping paint, while he was still working thick layers with the brush, which is why The Key feels rich, dense and mysterious.
How is our hand-painted study of The Key made?
Our painters paint the study of The Key by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of The Key has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When The Key is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of The Key suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose The Key in 100 × 70 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 70 × 50 cm. The Key is available in 70 × 50 cm, 80 × 55 cm, 90 × 60 cm, 100 × 70 cm, 120 × 85 cm, 150 × 110 cm, 180 × 130 cm and 210 × 148 cm. The 210 × 148 cm size is almost the size of the original: the original of The Key measures 210 × 147.5 cm, so our painting is the same on one side and 5 mm longer on the other. A simple rule for The Key: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does The Key arrive, and when?
We ship The Key rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of The Key are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of The Key is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of The Key painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
