Male and Female – Jackson Pollock
Male and Female is a painting by Jackson Pollock from 1942: two tall, totem-like figures in black, red, white and yellow stand side by side, surrounded by eyes, diamonds and a column of numbers. What does Male and Female show?
In Male and Female two upright figures fill almost the full height of the canvas; the one on the left is made of red and black shapes with a large eye, the one on the right is pale, with black diamonds on its body, and along the right edge numbers and sums run down as if on a school blackboard. Between and around them run blue, white and yellow strokes that already hint at Pollock’s later dripped lines. Male and Female comes from the years when Pollock was finding his own hand between Picasso, Surrealism and myth.
