White Mast – a white ship in the fog

A narrow upright scene to which the title hands the key: from mid-height, left of centre, rises a tall white blade – a mast with a thin dark vein in its core, the shaft and its rope – and at its foot two or three dark scratchy horizontal strokes reach to the left, like a spar or a horizon scratched into the fog.

Technique & Texture

Everything is soft grey-blue fog into which sharp events are incised: the white blade, the dark mass, the scratches. This is a hand-painted work of art – the fog is blended, the events within it sharp, which gives the scene its depth.

The Motif

To the right of the mast stands a dark charcoal mass – a ship’s hull or a pier’s shadow – descending from mid-height almost to the bottom, its edges softening into fog; white leaks of light creep along its right side, and a bright glow presses against it at the upper right. At the left middle the fog takes a greenish slate tint, and pale grey bands with a light patch on the right close the bottom.

Styling & Placement

A mysterious decorative painting for bedrooms, bathrooms and quiet corners; whoever does not see the ship receives a pure abstraction of light in fog – both readings are correct.
