Stories III – a rusted wall coming away
Painting on canvas peels its rectangular panels back to show the layers underneath, so the surface behaves like plaster coming off a wall rather than like paint on cloth: decorative painting for people who read a picture with their eyes close to it. Brown, white and gold cover the whole field, and leafy motifs appear in bronze-brown in the upper right corner.
Technique and texture
The surface is densest in the middle, where the paint gathers into lumpy, almost crusted deposits. The leaf motifs are pressed into a soft ground and then rubbed with gold, so they lift out of it as impressions. The upper right carries a warm rust-red that gives way downward to grey and white.
The motif
The central mass condenses into an irregular cluster of round forms that suggest ceramic buttons or fossil casts. Around it the block grid calms down and grows more regular. The bottom third is the warmest part, held by ochre and gold, and it finishes the piece like a floor.
Setting and placement
This one rewards a close look and gives up very little from across a room, so hang it where people pause. A narrow upright suits a doorway, a hall, or the wall beside a sofa.
