This abstract painting on canvas strikes with a dramatic contrast between dark and light — a dark, almost black rectangular mass at the centre of the canvas acts like a monolith standing amid a misty grey. From this darkness rises a narrow, bright form upward — like a ray of light piercing the dark, or a chimney carrying a fiery record into the sky. A horizontal line cuts through it in the middle, giving the painting balance and a compositional anchor. The surrounding grey and white are soft, floating, and in contrast to the sharpness of the dark core act like a breath. The textured palette-knife surface gives the painting an industrial, concrete quality that makes it especially attractive. Like every hand-painted artistic painting, it carries within itself the imprint of the artist’s body — pressure, speed, intensity — which gives the industrial appearance an authentic, human foundation.
