Grey Rain – hundreds of vertical strings in white
A hypnotic field of vertical lines: hundreds of thin dark strokes, pulled with a comb across a white-grey ground, fall across the upper two thirds of the canvas like rain or the strings of a harp. The lines waver slightly, break or skip in places – the field breathes, it is not mechanical.
Technique & Texture
The ground is white-grey plaster with a greyish blurred zone at the upper left, and the lines are drawn in parallel, gently swaying sweeps. This is a hand-painted work of art – every skip and every broken string is the trace of a hand, not of a pattern.
The Motif
At roughly two thirds of the height the lines condense into a darker compressed horizontal band with a thin dark rule at its upper edge, then end in an uneven fringe – like the hem of a fabric. The lowest fifteen percent is a clean, empty white base that gives the whole rain its ground and its silence.
