Sky and sea are built from long, horizontal impasto strokes that give the painting the rhythm of calm breathing. It is a hand-painted artistic painting – in the video above (0:40) a palette knife works yellow and orange into the sky and lays thick white strokes beside the sailboat for its reflection, then the finished Sunset at Sea 2 stands in a gold frame on an easel, and the last shots move in close on the boat’s heavy knife marks.
The Motif
High on the right, above the mast, floats a white moon with a soft halo, while right of centre a long, clear gold-white reflection of light stretches from the horizon to the lower edge of the water. The boat’s dark hull with its white waterline and small reflection beneath it is the only solid form in a world of light and colour.

This sailboat marine is painted in 16 landscape sizes, from 60 x 35 to 320 x 175 cm. Aim for a sailboat roughly two thirds as wide as the furniture beneath it: over a 200 cm sofa that means 130 x 70 or 140 x 80 cm, above a 180 cm double bed 120 x 65 cm, and along a long hallway 100 x 60 cm.
