Green Horizon – a green plane in the dark
A mottled green-teal plane floating on charcoal black, cut low by one thick plaster-white bar – a horizon in the dark: the teal zone spans most of the canvas, cut by the black frame at the left and below, mottled with hidden flecks – yellow sparks at the upper left and orange-red flecks right of centre.
Technique & Texture
Vertical drag-marks give it a rainy depth, and white chalky patches are scattered across the whole surface. This is a hand-painted painting on canvas – a white horizontal bar runs from the field’s left edge to the right edge of the canvas in the lower third, in thick impasto with green scuffs.
The Motif
Below the bar the green sinks quickly into the black lower band, and a charcoal-black frame surrounds the scene – a wide left band, a thin top strip and a heavy bottom, with a sooty texture and pale white speckle. A dramatic dark horizon, where the hidden green, red and gold shades reveal themselves only to a careful gaze.
