Going West – Jackson Pollock
Going West is a painting by Jackson Pollock from the mid-1930s: at night, under a full moon, a wagon drawn by mules makes its way through a dark, rolling mountain landscape. We paint our hand-painted study of Going West to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 53 × 38 cm to 150 × 110 cm or in a custom size. Before Going West is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does Going West show?
In Going West hills, tracks and sky twist in soft, dark waves, and pale mules and a covered wagon follow the curve of the track towards the horizon; above them a pale moon shines between the clouds. Pollock painted it after the example of his teacher Thomas Hart Benton, who painted stories of rural America, but the night mood and the swirling shapes are already his own. Going West tells of settlers heading for the American West, where Pollock grew up.
How is our hand-painted study of Going West made?
Our painters paint the study of Going West by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of Going West has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When Going West is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of Going West suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose Going West in 100 × 70 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 53 × 38 cm. Going West is available in 53 × 38 cm, 60 × 45 cm, 70 × 50 cm, 80 × 60 cm, 90 × 65 cm, 100 × 70 cm, 120 × 90 cm and 150 × 110 cm. A simple rule for Going West: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does Going West arrive, and when?
We ship Going West rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of Going West are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of Going West is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of Going West painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
