Pasiphaë – Jackson Pollock
Pasiphaë is a painting by Jackson Pollock from 1943: a crowded composition of figures, faces and signs in yellow, ochre, blue and red, with a pale form with white teeth at its centre and two upright figures at the edges. We paint our hand-painted study of Pasiphaë to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 100 × 60 cm to 244 × 143 cm or in a custom size. Before Pasiphaë is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.
What does Pasiphaë show?
In Pasiphaë the shapes overlap as in a dream: among curling lines appear eyes, profiles, hands and animal heads, and along the left and right edges stand tall figures like guards. The paint is laid on with a brush in dense, thick strokes. Pollock named the painting only after it was finished, after the myth of Pasiphaë, queen of Crete and mother of the Minotaur, and the wild story suits the restless scene of Pasiphaë.
How is our hand-painted study of Pasiphaë made?
Our painters paint the study of Pasiphaë by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of Pasiphaë has a real paint texture that a print does not have. The first photograph shows our finished study of Pasiphaë, stretched on its frame, on the easel, and the second, taken at an angle, shows the thick brushstrokes of the surface. When Pasiphaë is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
Which size of Pasiphaë suits your room?
For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose Pasiphaë in 120 × 70 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 100 × 60 cm. Pasiphaë is available in 100 × 60 cm, 120 × 70 cm, 140 × 80 cm, 160 × 90 cm, 180 × 100 cm, 200 × 120 cm, 220 × 130 cm and 244 × 143 cm. A simple rule for Pasiphaë: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.
How does Pasiphaë arrive, and when?
We ship Pasiphaë rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of Pasiphaë are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of Pasiphaë is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of Pasiphaë painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.
Frequently asked questions about Pasiphaë
Is Pasiphaë a print?
No. Every brushstroke of Pasiphaë is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.
Can I order Pasiphaë in a size that is not listed?
Yes. We also paint Pasiphaë in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order Pasiphaë.
Who was Pasiphaë?
In Greek myth Pasiphaë is the queen of Crete and the mother of the Minotaur. Pollock gave the painting this name once it was finished; the crowded figures of Pasiphaë suit the wild story well.
Is Pasiphaë a good gift?
Pasiphaë is a gift for a lover of Pollock, of Greek myths or of lively, warm colours. If you are unsure which size of Pasiphaë to choose, give a gift voucher.
