No. 22 – Mark Rothko

No. 22 is an abstract painting by Mark Rothko: a large yellow field, a red band with incised white lines and an orange field on a golden ground. We paint our hand-painted study of No. 22 to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 15 sizes from 40 × 39 cm to 297 × 272 cm or in a custom size. What does No. 22 show?

In No. 22 a broad golden-yellow field glows at the top with a pale strip along its edge, a narrow red band with thin light lines scratched into it runs across the middle, and a large warm orange field lies below, all with soft edges. With the incised lines Rothko gave the calm colours a hidden tension, which is why No. 22 feels warm, bright and tense at once.

How is our hand-painted study of No. 22 made?

Our painters paint the study of No. 22 by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of No. 22 has a real paint texture that a print does not have. The first photograph shows our finished study of No. 22 in a gold frame on the easel among frame samples, and the second photograph shows it from the side, where the incised white lines in the red band are easy to see. When No. 22 is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.
