No. 13 – Mark Rothko

No. 13 is a 1956 abstract painting by Mark Rothko: a dark grey field above a light, a green and a red band on a red ground. We paint our hand-painted study of No. 13 to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 14 sizes from 50 × 40 cm to 250 × 200 cm or in a custom size. What does No. 13 show?

No. 13 shows a narrow violet band at the top, a large dark grey-brown rectangle below it, then a thin light cream band, a green band and at the bottom a broad orange-red field, all on a warm red ground with soft edges. Rothko layered the colours like a landscape or a sky at dusk, which is why No. 13 feels calm, deep and mysterious.

How is our hand-painted study of No. 13 made?

Our painters paint the study of No. 13 by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of No. 13 has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When No. 13 is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.

How does No. 13 arrive, and when?

We ship No. 13 rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of No. 13 are done in our workshop in Slovenia.
