Claude Monet Painting in His Garden at Argenteuil is an oil painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir from 1873. The original measures 60 cm x 46 cm and is held by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford. Our oil painting is painted by hand in oils on canvas, in eight landscape sizes from 50 x 40 to 150 x 120 cm, among them the size of the original, 60 x 46 cm.
A painter painted at work
What is on record is where and who: Renoir painted Monet at Argenteuil while he was working in his own garden, where he spent a great deal of his time. On how the scene is arranged the source says nothing further, and we go no further either – what remains is an unusual situation: one of the Impressionists, painted at the easel, by the hand of another.
Why hand-painted, not a print
Our version is not a print. The canvas is small and densely painted, so the details sit close together here: the easel, the hand with the brush, the growth behind him. Print loses that density first – the screen does not separate two neighbouring strokes, and the garden behind the painter turns into one uniform green. A hand-painted canvas paints every stroke on its own, even where there are many of them on a small surface.
In the room
The subject is quiet and narratively closed, so it does well where it is looked at from close to and for a while: in a work corner, beside a bookshelf, in an office, or on a short living-room wall. For a room like that we recommend 70 x 55 cm or the size of the original, 60 x 46 cm, and for a larger wall 110 x 85 cm. Because it is a scene with a working figure, do not hang it too high – it works at eye level.
What you receive
We paint the canvas to order, by hand and for you alone, so every copy is made on its own; the canvas is usually painted and dried within three to four weeks. If you prefer, we will paint it in a size that is not on the list. Before despatch we send you a photograph of the finished canvas for your approval, and only then does the painting go out. Claude Monet Painting in His Garden at Argenteuil arrives stretched on a wooden frame and ready to hang, wrapped in protective film and in rigid packaging, with no further stretching or finishing needed.
